Country by country

For each country, the technology most developers work with, and the one it leans towards most compared with the index as a whole. The first is usually the same few languages everywhere; the second is what makes a country's pool different.

Share: part of the country's indexed developers working with the technology. "x": that share against the share across the whole index, smoothed for sample size. Counts are rounded down.

Technology by technology

Where each technology has the most developers, and the three countries that lean towards it most. A country can lead the second column without being large: it means a search there returns a denser pool.

How this is measured

Every developer in StarHunt's index is placed in a country from the location on their public GitHub profile, and assigned technologies from their own repositories and the reference projects they contribute to. A developer usually carries several technologies, so shares do not add up to 100.

Three guards keep small samples from producing improbable figures: a country needs 1,000 indexed developers to appear, a technology needs 75 developers in a country to be cited for it, and each index is pulled towards the global average by the equivalent of 300 average developers, which only a large, consistent gap overcomes.

The index is built from contributors to reference repositories for each technology, so it describes active open-source developers, not every developer in a country. Read the counts as a floor and the shares as the shape of that population.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common technology among GitHub developers in most countries?

Python. It is the most represented technology in 12 of the 22 countries with enough data in StarHunt's index, as of October 2026.

Which country leans most towards React Native?

Poland: 5.8% of its indexed developers work with React Native, 6.3x the share across the whole index.

Why not rank countries by number of developers?

Because the largest country would top every technology, which measures the size of the index rather than anything about the country. The share of local developers and the index against the global average show where a technology weighs most.

How are small countries kept from showing extreme figures?

Countries need at least 1,000 indexed developers and a technology at least 75 developers in a country to be cited. The index is also smoothed towards the global average, more strongly when the sample is small.
